Question about home "server" builds. Why are they needed?

New viewer here. As I build my new computer, I see many people here building home "servers" , to share files with family members.
Now forgive me, but what is being shared among the family? We have a plex media player installed, running on my desktop, a Dell 8 year computer, for 2 years without incident. There, the family can look at tv shows, family photos and home moves. I also have HDHomeRun to record over the air programming.
But for the life of me, I can't figure out what I want to...

Gigabyte HPC Server cooling question?

Does anyone know, or could find out, exactly how the following Gigabyte HPC server cools its CPUs? (excluding heat sinks)

As you can see there are no front chassis fans, only fans behind the GPUs and at the back of the Chassis; hence my question.

The specification back's this up by stating: "System fans: 4 x 40x40x28mm (25,000rpm) and
6 x 60x60x76mm (21,700rpm)

The product listing also states: "...ready to support the full list of AMD EPYC Rome 7002 Series processors: up to 225W...

Is there an EPYC Trubo Boost Clock Breakdown/Safe Max Temps Anywhere?

I'm looking for some kind of breakdown of how AMD's boost clock works similar to how you can view that here for Intel CPU's.

So for example the E5-2680v3 has a turbo listing of 4/4/4/4/4/4/4/4/5/6/8/8 which means it will boost 400MHz once 5 cores are in use, 500MHz with 4 cores, 600MHz with 3 cores, and 800MHz with 1-2 cores. I can't find anything similar to this for AMD EPYC CPU turbo...

Hi, has anyone got a Startech PEX10000sfp 10gbe card working with OMV v5 ?
[Debian based distro currently on the Linux amd64 v5.4.0 kernel - I think...]
I plugged a new card in last week and OMV just completely ignored it's existence [IMG]

Was hoping it would be plug and play, any advise would be thankfully received.

Thank, Antony

Windows Server : Rejoining new domain with same name, keeping profiles

Hi,

Quick Intentions: Re-join a new domain in a new DC server, which has same domain name and at the same time keeping existing user profiles/settings on desktops.

I need some opinions on how to re-join some desktop machines to the same domain name on a different server.

The story goes like this:

In a small network there was a server which was acting like a domain controller. There are some desktop machines (windows 10) that were part of that domain.

Meanwhile the server crashed, and...

Hello,

I have encountered an issue with a ioScale 3.2TB where the drive throws an error about an internal error and that the device gets disabled right after it lods the drivers.

As for the actual status, it shows the following error under fio-staus -a :

Failed: DEVICE IS OFFLINE. ALL DEADS AND WRITES WILL FAIL!

Has anyone had this issue and if so, is there any way to fix it?

I did try multiple drivers such as 3.2.15-Dell, 3.2.3-DELL and 3.2.4-DELL and there...

Hi there,

I was wondering wich cards should I buy.
Stumbled across a pair of Mellanox ConnectX-2 on the ebay for 99€.
My goal ist using them with my Windows 10 Workstation (Threadripper 1900X, MSI X399 Carbon AC build) and my Homeserver (Xeon E5-2620v3 on SuperMicro X10SRi-F).
Just a single P2P connection for now, but I would like to add something like a MikroTik CRS309-1G-8S+IN later on.
If I should go fiber, which 10GbE SFP+ transceivers would you recommend?
Splicing the fiber would not...

Starting a master thread for a few of my favorite affordable switches - I've been using and reverse engineering this switch line for years and figured it's time to share the goodies. The prices below fluctuate a lot with demand and with the best offer feature can usually be beaten. Switches are listed in order of raw capacity/capability, not price.

With OmniOS supporting KVM and Bhyve is there plans on implmenting a VM manager into Napp-it like Proxmox has? That would be great to create an all-in-one solution for hosting storage and VM's/Zones.

Looks like Asrock is finally making this one official and visible (other than a placard).

Anyone out there heard any peeps on when it might actually be available? This looks like it could be right up the ally for a small, relatively inexpensive home/lab server.

Perhaps a review will be seen soon? @Patrick ?

Thanks Much

I've been getting alot of PM's asking how to OC an AMD Epyc.

All you need to do is write the OC to the CPU MSR. As a reliable tool (for windows) for this i modded AsusZenStates to run on non Asus boards, you can download it here:
