40mm Fans, any recommendations?

Greetings!

I have several devices that could use a good Fan swap in my home rack and I would like to stay away from stepping down voltage if possible. In the past I would look at amazon and ebay for 40mm fans (not the dinky 40x10 ones) and they have been hit or miss. Wondering what you guys here have found useful in terms of decent airflow and lower (not silent) noise.

The applications I am looking for are 3-pin to quiet down some Juniper EX3300/2200 switches, and 4-pin model for 1U...

Dell 8024F noise level

Hi,

I´m looking to buy a 10Gbe switch with a bunch of SFP+ ports, and connect Mellanox ConnectX-2 & 3 cards to it.
When looking around the Dell 8024F looks promising feature wise, and is relatively cheap second hand.
My main concern is the noise level since I will have it in an apartment so I can´t have screaming fans. I have Voltaire 4036 Infiniband switch which was unbearable until I made a fan mod on it.

Does anybody have experience with the noise level of this switch, and also if it is...

Network Trunking Issue

Hi all, i'm hoping some networking gurus can help me with an issue i'm having.

I have the following Topology in my Home Lab:

Ubiquiti Edgemax Router
Dell X1052- Core Switch
Netgear XS708e- 10Gb Data Center Switch

The Edgemax is providing routing on all VLANs (router on a stick config).

I have the VLANs configured as subinterfaces on my LAN port which is connected by trunk to the X1052 with the VLANs I need routing capability.

The X1052 is connected via TwinAX 10Gb <--> 10Gb with VLAN50...

I'm having these strange network latency, crawling speed issues on a couple of Dell R610 servers I have. I have multiple other R610's with same specs, connected to the same Cisco 3750 switch and they're fine. I've done a lot of troubleshooting and still cannot fix the problem. I would appreciate help here. My observium shows no spikes on my network or aggressive traffic on any other server that would cause some bottle-necking of any kind.

I've bought a Cisco WS-C3560CX-8XPD-S consolidate some things, and to learn some IOS.
And mainly because it's cool for the hobby :)

The WS-C3560CX-8XPD-S has six 1GbE interface ports, two multi-GbE interface ports and two SFP+ interface ports.
It also has POE, so I can connect my UbiQuiti AP to it.

In my hypervisor server (Free Hyper-V 2012 R2) I will install a Qlogic card with two SFP+ ports, of which I will use one port connect to the first SFP+ port on the Cisco switch.
The port will be...

Starting a new thread for open discussion of recent upgrades to Storage Spaces. Is this enough to make it interesting?

With the release of Server 2012 R2 / Windows 8.1 MS has added some interesting new capabilities to Storage Spaces: Storage Tearing and Write-Back Cache.

Storage Tiering allows creation of a pool containing both SSD and HDD storage with promotion of frequently accessed data to the SSD tier with less frequently accesses data stored on the (presumably slower)...

Hellow!

This is my first FS thread on servethehome and don't really use eBay to sell (yet), so I decided to offer some of my unused gear for the EU folks. If you need pictures, let me know :). Tried to look around the forums & eBayfor pricing... but it varies, so everything is best offer.

SAS to SATA connection clarification. What is SGPIO?

I have S2600CP board with 4x SATA3Gb ports and 2x SATA6Gb ports
I have P4000M case with 16 hot swap bays on 4x backplanes. Each backplane have SAS connector.
I have 2x SATA->SAS cables, they both have 4 SATA connectors + SGPIO
But on board I have only 1 SGPIO connector. Is that optional?

So, question is. If I want to maximize usage of front panel - how should I connect SATA to SAS?
I want to run system disk, some smaller SSD with Win server 2012 and I think it's not critical if it's on...

I recently got ahold of a new in box Intel i350-T4 (quad port) NIC from China - the box even included a Intel driver CD.. I found this a good opportunity to compare it to my genuine card which was pulled from a Dell server. The Intel i350-T4 NICs coming out of Dell severs have varying Dell part numbers on the stickers, I currently know of 3: K9CR1, THGMP and 9YD6K - there might be more. I am not comparing any stickers.

The counterfeit cards work fine but after a few months they start to...

I've had a small Norco rack for a while to keep my servers in. It's worked pretty well for the most part, but as you can see, it is pretty full:

You can probably also see that it is very dusty. Now that I've decided to finally build my FreeNAS box, I have no place in the rack to put it. As many of you have, I went to Craigslist. As I searched around, I found a few interesting options....
