Hey guys,
I currently have:
I'm running a 10x2tb raid 6 and a 5x2tb raid 5, using Linux mdadm (software raid).
I've noticed the green drives - unsurprisingly in hindsight - have given me a lot of problems as they drop from the arrays .
I was hoping to replace them with 10x 3tb WD RED (WD30EFRX) drives, either running in 10x3tb raid6 or running in 9x3tb raid 5 + 1x3tb spare.
I have read that if I'm using software raid, it's best to turn off the TLER.
Now, it's been brought to my attention that the rebranded hitatchi drives, now Toshiba, might be a good option, in particular the DT01ACA300.
Some quick fact-finding showed that the DT01ACA300 has CCTL which is comparable to (or rather toshiba's implementation of WD's) TLER.
In any case, I reiterate that it's recommended to disable/turn off CCTL or TLER if running software raid (rather than hardware raid).
Now, the DT01ACA300 is considerably cheaper than the WD30EFRX.
Other than TLER and "fixed" head parking, I read that the WD30EFRX is really just a WD green drive. Is that correct? If that is the case, is it appropriate to get the DT01ACA300 instead?
Any advice is much appreciated.
Cheers
